The film

Chile, 1999. Franco de la Rosa is a kid from Conchalí who sings just like Elvis and works construction with his father. He has six months to prove he can make a living from music.

With a manager who only knows shortcuts, a sister who dances without knowing how, and a song you can't get out of your head, "Chica Rica", Franco sneaks onto the red carpet of the Viña del Mar Festival. For a few days, the whole country wants to know who he is, and who the chica rica is.

A comedy about dreaming big with empty pockets, about the family that holds you up when everything falls apart, and about nineties television, which made you a star on Monday and tore you down by Friday.

Based on a true story

In 1999, René de la Vega, a young man from Conchalí in Santiago, self-produced an album and a low-budget music video. The song was called "Chica Rica". It played on radio and TV shows, and it stuck in Chile's memory for good.

The film changes the names and tells, with humor and affection, what happened when a working-class kid tried to reach the biggest stage in Latin America.

  1. His song "Chica Rica" became one of the most remembered in Chilean history.
  2. But his music career never took off, because of the constant harassment of TV shows.
  3. Today, René de la Vega has a successful career as mayor of Conchalí.

Closing title cards of the film.
