Goodbye box, hello ghost.

July 1st arrived not with a bang, but a carefully worded memo from Sony: new PlayStation games won’t ship on discs after January 2028. If your first thought was “they killed the medium,” stop. That’s the easy lie everyone grabs.
The reality is harder, quieter: digital wins, overwhelmingly so. Sony knows this—their own numbers show downloads are the main meal, physical copies a respected side dish shrinking to scraps. This isn’t a tantrum; it’s a corporation leaning into gravity.
And yet, for so long, the disc meant something stubborn. It gave the game teeth by being an object. You bought something that had weight, that lived on a shelf next to paperbacks and records.
That friction mattered. It anchored the escape in the room. To lose that feels like losing a ritual, even if the replacement is smoother and cheaper.
That’s where my worry lands: when convenience eats ceremony, we get faster but shallower. We trade skin for glass sometimes, and I don't trust giving away the skin easily. But this isn't surrender; it's negotiation.
Do we love the world more than the plastic case? Can a perfect story exist without a small piece of resistance—the scratch risk, the swap-out possibility, the click of insertion? The industry loves to frame this as inevitable progress.
Progress does happen, yes. But progress doesn't mean no loss—it means different losses arrive wearing better marketing coats than we expected. We should mourn how something used to be while still walking forward without apologizing for taking up space now.
