Honestly, it’s more than just missing notes; it feels like the game took several clumsy steps away from the series’ great tradition. When big promises are made—updates, fixes, love poured into the machine—you cling to a corner of hope.

Last time, I admitted that while Firaxis could certainly tidy the edges, the worst problems felt baked into the floorboards. After digging deeper into what the latest tests showed, though, my suspicion hasn't lifted. The core aches remain: diplomacy reads like a spreadsheet pretending to have soul; the ‘Ages’ structure boxes players into rooms the game never meant for them.

It’s hard to swallow when something so massive falls flat. Yet, here is where it gets quiet and sharp. In those frustrating stretches, across three games in a row, my fingers kept landing on that tiny hook—that “one more turn” twitch.

It proved something small and stubborn: beneath all the polished glass and ambition, there is still a 4X game breathing. That discovery isn't applause. It barely counts as encouragement.

It hurts because we’re watching a giant get rescued by a whisper instead of a roar. We keep hearing the old tune: these games launch rough, but they sing later with expansions. With Civ VII, I don’t buy that note easily.
