It’s a beautiful, complex piece of hardware designed less for casual dipping into a metaverse and more for the devoted tinkerer willing to treat it like a highly advanced workstation tethered to pure escapism.
From comfort alone, it makes headlines. Weighing almost half what its predecessor did, and feeling remarkably balanced on the head, it earns praise quickly. The specs are impressive: pancake lenses bring clarity, resolutions hit 2160x2160 per eye, and the internal components boast serious muscle.
You get two distinct modes of operation: true standalone play using its integrated chips—capable of handling classics like Half-Life: Alyx natively—or functioning as a wirelessly streamed extension of your main PC rig via the included 6GHz dongle. When leveraged as a portable cinema screen fed by a powerhouse desktop setup, the immersion is staggering.
But this ambition carries a steep tariff. At $1,059 for the base model, it sits firmly in the realm of specialized gear, costing substantially more than competing consumer offerings like the Quest 3. And while Valve provides pathways for customization—like third-party prescription inserts or optional kits—the sheer investment forces a choice: embrace the high-end ecosystem or stick to existing standards.
Frankly, trying to pin down its utility is difficult because its scope is so wide. Is it an evolution of VR? A competitor to AR glasses? Or simply Valve building the ultimate high-fidelity remote control for your existing Steam library?
It seems to be all three simultaneously.
