Can Brutality Have Welcome Mat Etiquette? Rethinking Accessibility in Grand Strategy

My uncle gave me a strategy game when I was young, even though I had never played one before.

If someone tries to hand a total immersion simulation wrapped in existential dread to a complete novice, disaster usually follows. Not necessarily dramatic collapse, but slow surrender. Remember getting dropped into one of those enormous historical wargames as a kid?

Zero preparation. Just suddenly faced with armies, maps layered upon layers of detail, and objectives that felt less like goals and more like cosmic riddles designed solely to induce panic. Eventually, the sheer friction becomes unbearable; the quest for nonexistent hidden items replaces actual engagement, culminating inevitably in utter rout during a pivotal battle. Most beginners pack it in shortly thereafter.

This painful familiarity informs why developers like Creative Assembly seem determined to soften the landing zone for Total War: Warhammer 40,000. Their goal is straightforward enough: capitalize on growing interest by inviting newcomers into what feels like such an immense cultural edifice—that bleak tapestry woven from endless warfare and impossible odds characteristic of Warhammer 40k.

In essence, they want everyone interested in the spectacle allowed inside the perimeter fence.

They acknowledge plainly that millions may stumble onto this property having never encountered concepts like ‘Space Marines.’ Lore density alone could derail enthusiasm faster than poor unit placement suggests otherwise. Therefore, introducing mechanisms gently seems prudent groundwork alongside teaching mythology basics via guided experiences built directly into introductory campaigns using incremental feature rollout techniques—UI gating acts as pacing control here.

Yet, beneath this carefully constructed welcome mat lurks a fundamental tension that cannot be ignored: despite all scaffolding erected for easier ingress, the destination remains uncompromisingly severe. The commitment stated repeatedly by leadership is firm: fundamentally altering the DNA of what constitutes a Total War experience is off limits.

The ramps exist not to replace the climb itself, but simply to allow passage up towards it initially populated slopes leading away from oblivion. Once past those initial lessons learned painstakingly through curated pathways, players find themselves squarely back amidst unending galactic slaughterhouse scenarios defined by unrelenting darkness and overwhelming stakes.

It’s a gamble predicated on conversion rates outweighing potential dilution fatigue among veterans accustomed to raw brutality upfront versus easing audiences into shared misery gradually afterward.”
