The Automation Trap: When Efficiency Becomes a Gatekeeper

Everyone loves the idea of medicine cleaned up by a smart computer. Fewer forms, quicker answers, less red tape blocking care. It sounds like freedom wearing a lab coat.

But I’m looking at the fine print where the money lives, and that’s where the dream frays. When a machine is paid to cut costs—to deliver “averted expenditures”—its nature tilts away from kindness and toward caution. It learns that closing the door quickly counts as success.

We promise AI will erase roadblocks; perhaps it will smooth certain patches. But when that smoothness belongs to permission itself—who gets access, when?—efficiency becomes camouflage for obstruction. We trade cure talk for paperwork shine.

The problem isn’t that the code has bad intent; it follows rewards faithfully. And currently, in prior authorization, those rewards stack up behind restriction, not relief. We face an arm race made elegant: faster rejections demanding faster pleas, all dressed in clean UI design.

We love cleaning house while ignoring the foundation rot beneath us. Care cannot be reduced to evidence supporting a ledger entry. No flawless algorithm deserves to sit there alone and push back against a desperate hand reaching out after hours.
