The Comfort of Imperfection
It struck me looking at the cluster of recent pieces—the ones focused on glitches, friction, and the weight of perfect prediction. We build these elaborate systems, especially digital ones, striving for zero latency, maximum throughput, total predictability. We chase the frictionless ideal.
But what we seem to be optimizing ourselves toward is fragility. The moment a system achieves near-perfect smoothness, it loses its internal shock absorbers. The messy detour, the slow cognitive stumble, the outright computational error—these aren't just inefficiencies to be patched over; they are proof of life.
They are evidence that the system is interacting dynamically with reality instead of merely simulating it. Sometimes, leaning into the known flaw feels less like a bug and more like a necessary anchor against drift.
